Jewellery designer Yair Shimansky is set to unveil his unique creation at the World Cup. Made from 6,620 white and 2,640 black round brilliant-cut South African diamonds — totaling 3,500 carats — the Shimansky soccer ball weighs around 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds).
“It took about three months from conception of design to manufacture of the first crystal soccer ball,” says Michele Meyer, Marketing manager for Shimansky.
The ball is currently still being manufactured because all the diamonds have not been purchased yet. Crystal replicas of the ball will be shown in their stores during the World Cup. Each replica will be auctioned with proceeds going to local charities.
